TOMMY HILFIGER: Fashion Designer – $400M
Tommy Hilfiger has built a fashion empire founded on All-American style. A true entrepreneur, the upstate New York native emptied his meager pocket of $150 in the early ’70s to open his first clothing store, People’s Place. Hilfiger built on the success of this first outlet to eventually start his own label of original designs. His name has since become an aspirational byword for the preppy lifestyle. Tommy’s personal fortune is estimated at $400 million, while his company did $6.7 billion in revenue as of 2015. However, he no longer owns it. He sold it in 2006 to Apax Partners for $1.6 billion. They resold it to Phillips-Van Heusen for $3 billion in 2010. Hilfiger remains the chief design consultant.
