Andreas Krieger – Born in 1965
Andreas Krieger, born Heidi Krieger in East Berlin, was a standout shot putter for East Germany’s SC Dynamo Berlin. In the 1980s, unbeknownst to him, he was subjected to systematic doping with anabolic steroids by state sports officials, leading to significant physical changes, including increased muscle mass and a deeper voice.
In 1997, Andreas underwent gender affirmation surgery. Reflecting on his past, he expressed that the doping regime deprived him of the chance to discover his gender identity without external influence. In 2002, Andreas married Ute Krause, a former East German swimmer who also suffered under the state’s doping practices.
