Katastrophe – Born in 1979
Rocco Kayiatos, known by his stage name Katastrophe, is a pioneering transgender rapper and producer from San Francisco. He began his artistic journey in 1997, competing in poetry slams and winning the 1998 Youth Speaks poetry slam. In 2002, he ventured into music production, creating beats that narrate experiences beyond mainstream education, gender, and culture.
His transition involved hormone therapy and top surgery, which enhanced his masculine features and deepened his voice. In 2009, Rocco co-founded “Original Plumbing,” a magazine dedicated to trans-male culture, further amplifying transgender voices in media. His work continues to challenge societal norms, making him an influential figure in the music industry and LGBTQ+ advocacy.
