41. Shipwrecks and Sunshine
Some of the best photos are those which show a stark contrast. This photo manages exactly that, as it displays a young woman playing paddle ball in the Tel Aviv sun… with the wreck of an Israeli ship looming behind her during the period of unrest in Israel in the late 1940s.
The ship (called the Altalena) was bombed during infighting between the Israeli government and insurgent groups, each trying to gain dominance over the newly formed country. The ship floated there for a year, and even became something of a tourist attraction, before being sunk at sea.
