32. Into the Wild
This candid shot of the Mojave Indian named Maiman was taken in the 1870s by Timothy H. O’Sullivan. The native man in the photos was a well-known guide, who would often take Americans into the desert to teach them about their culture, as well as find the perfect views to take photos of.
O’Sullivan was an interesting character of his times, too. He was keen on snapping native Americans in their natural settings, and as a result, captured much of the reality of their lives. He also found fame as a Civil War photographer, too.
