The American West was a land of promise. There was gold in those hills, and fortunes to be made by the brave men willing to go and find them… but there was one problem, as this photo shows: few women were willing to go with them.
This photo shows a group of men clearly desperate for some female company, as they’ve hoisted a sign on their hut saying ‘Wives Wanted’. This kind of thing prompted the launch of the mail order brides concept, and it was clearly a tough and lonely time for these pioneers!
