59. Picnic on the Highway
It’s a shocking image, and one which hits the core of our own feelings of basic safety! This photo shows a group of young people stopping for a picnic – right in the middle of the highway – during the oil crisis which struck the Netherlands in the 1970s. It was a dark time for much of the continent… but these young people seem to be enjoying their freedom, and enjoying a jam session despite their strange surroundings.
The oil crisis struck in 1973, and was the result of an embargo launched by Arab oil companies, protesting the countries which offered support to Israel during the Yom Kippur war.
