Why the Amish Call Us ‘English’
This society has a unique way of looking at the world. They refer to people outside their community as “English.” And no, they are not talking about the language; they mean anyone who doesn’t share their lifestyle. It’s all rooted in history. Back then, the Amish were originally from Europe—specifically, Switzerland and Germany—where they were part of a religious group known as the Anabaptists.
“English” was a term used to describe anyone who wasn’t part of their group, often referring to outsiders since most of the population they encountered were English-speaking. So, it’s like their way of saying “the outside world,” with a dash of their heritage mixed in.
