When it comes to food, Amish folks aren’t just living off kale and quinoa (though they grow those, too). Their meals are hearty, simple, and often homegrown, emphasizing what’s fresh and local. They focus on wholesome, unprocessed foods and aren’t afraid to indulge in sugar.
Moreover, the community even has their word for being Amish foodies, known as “freinschmeckers.” Author Lorilee Cracker, who wrote “Money Secrets of the Amish: Finding True Abundance in Simplicity, Sharing, and Saving,” explained what that word means: Eating good, fresh food. They’re so far behind, they’re ahead. They were eating organic, fresh farmer’s market food before it was hip to do so.
