With no exceptions, it’s a sacred vow to pay it all back. The idea of owing money is almost like an itch that has to be scratched until it’s gone.
They see it as an obligation to uphold their reputation and maintain their peace of mind. Banks love the Amish because of their reputation for paying back loans, but they aren’t exactly lining up for credit. They prefer to live debt-free, finding creative ways to avoid it whenever possible.
