Le diagnosticaron un tipo raro de cáncer llamado “tumor intraabdominal desmoplásico de células pequeñas y redondas”. Murió el 22 de diciembre de 1998. En su testamento, quiso ser enterrada de acuerdo con los principios musulmanes, religión a la que se convirtió poco antes de su muerte.
