James Spader wird oft mit Richter Reinhold verwechselt, beide sind blonde Schauspieler aus den 80er Jahren. Spaders beliebtester Film aus den 80er Jahren war Pretty in Pink. Er spielte in einer Reihe weiterer erfolgreicher Filme, aber seine Karriere erreichte ihren Höhepunkt mit der TV-Serie über Rechtsfragen und Anwälten namens The Practice und ihrer Fortsetzung Boston Legal.
