Gewichtszunahme und Muskelaufbau-Training wurden zur alltäglichen Aktivität für den Schauspieler, der sechs Stunden am Tag für sechs Monate trainierte, um in den Charakter zu kommen. Gewichtheben, 2000 Sit-Ups pro Tag, Boxen, Laufen, acht Meilen und das Werfen eines 350-Pfund-Reifens waren Teil der täglichen Agenda. Es hat funktioniert. In nur etwa sechs Monaten ging Gyllenhaal mit Hilfe des Trainers Terry Claybon von 147 Pfund auf 175 Pfund.
