Eine weitere radikale transgender-körperliche Transformation war für die Rolle von Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl notwendig. Der Schauspieler Eddie Redmayne nahm die Herausforderung an, eine der ersten Personen zu spielen, die ihr Geschlecht gewechselt haben, und sah am Ende so aus, als hätte er selbst eine echte Geschlechterumwandlung durchgemacht. Der Schauspieler konzentrierte sich nicht nur auf das Aussehen, sondern las auch eine Reihe von Büchern über das Thema, um in den Charakter zu kommen. Redmayne musste auch für die Rolle abnehmen, indem er sagte, dass er etwas Frühstück aß und an den meisten Tagen kaum Mittagessen hatte.
