Es wird immer offensichtlicher und häufiger, dass Gesundheitsprobleme mit Fettleibigkeit in Verbindung gebracht werden und nicht einmal Prominente können sich ihr entziehen. Die Pop- und Jazzsängerin Patti Austin kennt die Probleme der Gewichtszunahme und die daraus resultierenden medizinischen Folgen nur zu gut. Sie entwickelte Diabetes und Atembeschwerden durch Asthma in Verbindung mit ihrem Gewicht. Ihr wurde dringend geraten, Gewicht zu verlieren, um schwere Krankheiten zu vermeiden, und so unterzog sie sich einer Magenbypassoperation. Ihr Gewichtsverlust betrug 120 Pfund und sie sieht fast unkenntlich aus von der Figur, die sie früher hatte.
