Ela então passou a ter papéis nos filmes populares Crossfire e The Narrow Margin. Suas performances trouxeram fãs em todo o mundo. Então, quando ela anunciou sua aposentadoria em 1952, deixou os fãs e colegas estrelas chocados e confusos. A razão para a sua aposentadoria precoce é que ela queria passar mais tempo concentrando-se em sua família, que inclui cinco filhos e, em anos mais recentes, muitos netos pequenos.
