Dominique Dunne fue una joven actriz que tuvo una carrera corta en el mundo de las películas y series de televisión. Ganó fama por su papel de Dana Freeling (hija mayor de la familia) en la película Poltergeist. Pero, antes de que pudiera protagonizar otra película, en octubre de 1982, fue asesinada por su ex novio, Thomas Sweeney, quien la estrangulo mientras se encontraba en su casa; la actriz tenía solo 22 años cuando murió. El abogado del asesino logró reducir los cargos de homicidio voluntario en un polémico juicio y cumplió tres años y medio en prisión.
