Sie bekam die Rolle, als sie erst 17 Jahre alt war und keinerlei Erfahrung als Schauspielerin hatte. Ihr unschuldiges Aussehen und ihr frisches Talent brachten ihr auch eine Reihe von Golden Globe-Nominierungen ein. Es wurde gemunkelt, dass Susan für einen kurzen Zeitraum in ihren Bildschirmbruder, gespielt von David Cassidy, verknallt war.
