Rooney Mara scherzte nicht herum, als sie ihre erste Hauptrolle bekam. Für die Darstellung des Mädchens mit dem Drachen-Tattoo Lisbeth Salander musste die Schauspielerin ihren Körper Tattoos und Piercings (Lippe, Nase, Augenbraue) aussetzen. Nach dem Film hatte sie eine stechende Entfernung, hielt sich aber an einer bestimmten fest. Glücklicherweise waren die Tattoos nicht echt, denn eine Tattooentfernung wäre kein Spaziergang im Park gewesen. Ihre Leistung im Film wurde von der Kritik gelobt und erhielt einen Oscar und eine Nominierung für den Golden Globe.
