John Travolta war nicht nur einer körperlichen Transformation unterworfen, sondern musste auch für die Rolle der Edna Turnblad in Hairspray “Frau werden”. Er musste sich nicht nur als Frau verkleiden, sondern auch 100 Pfund zunehmen, um die übergroße Frau zu werden, die Edna ist. Er verbrachte fünf Stunden am Tag bei der Visagistin, um das Ebenbild von ihr zu werden, und vor den Dreharbeiten nahm er Tanz- und Gesangsunterricht. Travolta dachte jedoch über 14 Monate nach, bevor er die Rolle annahm.
