Sua carreira começou quando ele apareceu em peças da Broadway, tanto como ator quanto como mágico. Após seu sucesso no teatro, Carpenter assinou um contrato com a MGM, e em três anos, ele participou de oito filmes, sendo o mais bem sucedido deles foi Três pequenas palavras,onde ele atuou ao lado de Debbie Reynolds. Ele também era muito bom em escrever romances e, nos anos 80, seus livros se tornaram bastante populares.
